10-key typing test

Test your speed on the numeric keypad. Results in keystrokes per hour (KPH).

Type the highlighted number and press Enter. The timer starts with your first key.

What is a 10-key test?

A 10-key test measures how fast and accurately you enter numbers on the numeric keypad, the block of keys on the right of a full-size keyboard. It's common in hiring for data entry, accounting, banking and other jobs with a lot of number work.

How it works

Type the highlighted number and press Enter. The next number lights up straight away. Some numbers have two decimals, like amounts on an invoice. Choose 1, 3 or 5 minutes above the test. The timer starts with your first key.

How KPH is calculated

  • KPH (keystrokes per hour) counts the keys in every number you entered correctly, including the decimal point and Enter, scaled to one hour.
  • Gross KPH counts all keystrokes, including numbers with errors.
  • Accuracy is the share of numbers you entered without a mistake.

Requirements differ a lot between employers, so check the job listing for the exact KPH and accuracy they ask for. Most ask for high accuracy as well as speed.

Tips for a better 10-key score

  • Rest your middle finger on 5. Most keypads have a small bump on that key.
  • Use your thumb for 0 and your little finger for Enter.
  • Keep your eyes on the number, not on your hand.
